BT Digital Archives

Several weeks ago, on the 15 May 2013, several British Library folks involved in Digital Scholarship went to an event hosted by Coventry University about the . There were a number of speakers from the various collaborative partners in the project – Coventry University, the BT Archive, and The National Archives. BT is the world’s oldest communications company with a history stretching back to the start of UK telecommunications in 1846. This history is reflected in their archive somewhere beneath Holborn which contains 2.5 to 3 kilometres of shelving. As well as material about BT’s development as a UK company, the Archive contains a lot of material about the global history of telecommunications and the international development of an information society built on a foundation of telecommunication. From Flickr user: tarotasticDavid Hay, the Head of Archives at BT, gave an introduction to the digitisation project which began in January 2012 and is due to be completed by July 2013. The project digitised approximately 8% of the entire collection with selection criteria focusing on primarily science and technology-related material with a balance between breadth, depth, and “pretty stuff”. Formats include photographs (tens of thousands), research reports, and subject/registry files. Their audience focus was primarily on Higher Education with a secondary audience of the general public. The bid for JISC funding was for 450,000 digital images and ultimately they produced 481,099 over a 10-month period. Chris Mumby from The National Archives gave a talk on the project workflow: how the items make their way from Holborn to Kew, from conservation to imaging, and from internal OCR to external transcription. As a collaborative project, different aspects of the workflow are handled by different partners and different work-packages:Project Management package – Coventry UniversityDigitisation package – BT Archive and The National ArchivesScoping at BT ArchiveItems transported to TNA at KewConservation by TNA staffImaging by TNA staffMetadata creation on a mixed modelOCR text created at TNATranscription services from an external providerItems transported by to BT ArchivePortal creation package – BT Archive and Coventry UniversityLanding page design from (recently rebranded as Game Science Group) Academic package  – Coventry University and BT ArchiveThe BT Archives project is of a similar scope and size to the project on which I work and so the issues and proposed solutions related to workflow management were familiar to me. The need for consistency was mentioned a lot: David Hay emphasised the need to define language and nomenclature at the start of a project (using glossaries, stylesheets, guidelines, etc.) in order to ensure effective communication between areas; he also discussed the need for consistency in statistics gathering and metrics as well as the need to occasionally be flexible with milestones and timescales. For ensuring consistency in file-naming conventions, TNA found it best to create a folder structure and filenames that reflect BT cataloguing conventions (which meant learning the unique cataloguing conventions and ‘finding number’ constructions of the Archive) and replicate the archive file structures. The speakers also emphasised the importance of strict project management and consistency in approach from the very start of the project. David mentioned the importance of thorough scoping at the start. Catt Baum, the Conservation Manager at TNA, said that conservation is often overlooked in digitisation projects: since there’s no point putting an image online from a file that can’t be read, it needs to be built into workflows from the start. The iconic trimphone. From Flickr user: jovikeBoth David Hay and Chris Mumby made points about minimal levels of metadata creation. Transferring data between work-packages and third-party developers creates added levels of complication so they advocated not digitising uncatalogued material and not starting projects in which cataloguing has to be built into the workflow. Their metadata creation focused on OCR of selected categories of material and some enhancing of catalogue records for ‘category B’ engineering reports. Other speakers gave presentations on the interesting research that was being done with the digitised materials: Hilary Nesi discussed corpus query tools for text mining and linguistic analysis of the correspondence materials in the Archive (and emphasised the importance of defining what a ‘letter’ is early on in the project); Gemma Tombs talked about problem-based learning and using archive materials to construct learning scenarios for undergraduates; Martin Woolley talked about academic projects in design and his case studies of the design of the iconic trimphone and its place in UK design philosophy. Overall the message from these presentations was that it’s what we do with the content – interesting and useful academic research, defining historical narratives – that is important rather than the physical processes of digitisation. Digitisation is a means of overcoming the constraints and limitations of the physical world and setting content free as digital material.  - Full Post

In his remarks, Houston gave this advice: “They say that you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Think about that for a minute: who would be in your circle of 5? I have some good news: MIT is one of the best places in the world to start building that circle. If I hadn’t come here, I wouldn’t have met Adam, I wouldn’t have met my amazing cofounder, Arash, and there would be no Dropbox. One thing I’ve learned is surrounding yourself with inspiring people is now just as important as being talented or working hard. Perl+SDL 3D Rendering

Recently we have done a lot of work on the next release of SDL Perl. But it all pays off when I see users do cool things as one of the users has done below. Talon^++! This project is a great example for people wanting to learn 3D from scratch. --yapghThis was a project to test how well Perl+SDL performs and does not use OpenGL at all. This is all perl and SDL, with the help of libsdl_gfx for SDL::GFX::Primitives. Texture mapping doesn't use SDL::GFX::Primitives because textured_polygon just takes a surface, tiles it, and clips out the polygon, which doesn't look 3D at all.
Below are some screen shots of this little toy in action. If you'd like to try it yourself, you can download the entire project . You can rotate the objects with the mouse, or keyboard arrows. Also press shift to toggle shading and space to switch objects.
NOTE: the project is compressed in the .tgz format, if you are a windows user, you may need a tool like 7zip to extract the contents.Standard Cube:Standard Cube with Pseudo Shading:Standard Diamond:Standard Diamond with Pseudo Shading:Textured Cube:Perspectively Correct Textured Cube:Perspectively Correct Textured Cube with shading: - Full Post

SDL Perl Game Contest

Alright, boys and girls, it's the moment you've been waiting for all week: The weekly showdown. Round. Three. FIGHT!!, by Tobias Leich (FROGGS)Our german battletoad presents us with another masterpiece. Bubble Breaker is a highly addictive puzzle game where you try to eliminate the largest number of balls by matching groups of two or more balls with the same color., by JT Palmer (jtpalmer)Speaking of puzzles, JT did a really nice job in his latest addition to the Contest. Puzzle Cars is a game where you must click the arrows to redirect the (sometimes intense!) traffic to their appropriate destinations, according to car colour. It's an easy concept, but can prove very challenging, and soon enough you'll find yourself storming rapidly between arrows to achieve as many points as possible!, by Kartik Thakore (kthakore)This was a really busy week for Kartik, and he had to spend much of his free time updating branches of the project and moving around, so he wasn't able to finish his clone just yet. But so far it's looking really sharp, and we are anxious to see what he'll make of it next week!, by... - Full Post

0x1 step forward, 0x10 steps back

So last few days have been a test of my patience. Working on the Avenger bit to hack out a game that doesn't devolve into chaotic code has been hard. Partly the reason has been due to how SDLx::* and Box2D force some horrible design patterns. So after 4 rewrites of a simple Zemming walking across the screen, I decided something different is needed.

Moo and 's Idea

That something different may be the act of admitting that some of the design choices made in SDLx::* (SDLx::App) specifically were made for speed and not better game development. Therefore a possible answer could be to refactor out SDL Agnostic code out of SDLx::* and make that in to a well written game development library (Avenger). Mithaldu suggestion, we could base this new fork of ''.

Anyway Avenger and Zemmings seem a bit further away now  ... - Full Post

SDL2 API stabilization and new work

SDL2 C library API is stabilized

So near the end of Feburary, Sam announced that the SDL2 API has been stabilized! Hearing I emailed to the sdl-devel mailing list and with that kmx, jtpalmer and Froggs have helped me to get started on the bindings for SDL2 perl.
Alien-SDL2 is not ready yet but you can get kmx's packages and install them on strawberry perl your self. Or for windows compile and install from the source.

You can see it at:

I also ran some tiny and completely not to be believed benchmark between the two scripts on my Windows 7 i5 laptop:

perl scripts\benchmark.pl

       Rate  sdl sdl2

sdl   867/s   -- -16%

sdl2 1033/s  19%   --

This is just for clearing the screen and drawing some squares. Both are software renders and not using hardware acceleration.

ZCommunications

Developments within capitalism favor the partial emergence of these conditions, though their full realization would make capitalism impossible. How they change the production process already becomes visible in the digital realm, though it’s unlikely to stop there. The free software and free culture movements have radically changed the ways of producing software and knowledge goods. These changes have caused some markets – such as those for Internet software, programming tools and encyclopedias – to shrink considerably or disappear altogether. These areas have become dominated by free programs such as Apache, Firefox, WordPress, non-proprietary programming languages such as Perl and Python, open development environments such as Eclipse, and by the free Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia. They have largely driven out competing offers which (as usual in capitalism) are only available for sale.
